The Insomnia Gaming Festival took place once again at the Birmingham NEC on the weekend, hosting a plethora of esports tournaments.
We take a look back on the main winners and what happened.
Starting off with the biggest tournament (in terms of prize pool), the £30,000 CSGO Open was won by UK organisation Team Endpoint, who beat Business5 3-1 in the final to take home the £10,000 top prize.
It was also a successful event for fellow UK esports organisation MnM Gaming, who picked up two wins at the show!
MnM’s Kieran “Toastmonster” Kane won the Hearthstone tournament, which featured a £1,500 pool, while the organisation also took home first place in the £7,500 Overwatch UK Masters. Toastmonster beat Seandk 3-2 in the Hearthstone final; the Overwatch team defeated Kernow Esports in straight games.
Looking to League of Legends, current holders UK organisation exceL Esports won the £5,000 Open tournament. As the current holders, they beat Danish org Good Game Esport to receive the £2,500 first place prize.
Rocket League was an interesting title at i63, as it had two major tournaments. The usual £4,000 Rocket League Open was won by Cantankerous, who beat Defy Gaming in the final.
In a separate Mountain Dew Game Fuel League tournament, held in the Big Betty truck that doubles up as a mobile esports arena, Not Quite Sure won the UK regional. However Filthy Casuals won the League overall and will now be heading to North America for a boot camp.
Interestingly, the classic cartoony FPS Team Fortress 2 had a £7,500 prize pool – and an impressive 10,000+ live viewers on Twitch. The competition was won by Frototech.
There were of course a string of other community esports tournaments and initiatives.
GAME BELONG held a PlayerUnknown’s Battlegrounds event in a free-to-play 100-seat arena, as well as various Arena Clash tournaments, for example.
Roll on Insomnia next year, where the inaugural British Esports Championships finals for schools and colleges are set to take place.
