First teams progress to playoffs in the Spring 2020 British Esports Championships

Our school and college liaison officer Alice Leaman looks back on the British Esports Championships matches from February 24th to 28th 2020 and runs through the first few teams to reach the playoffs!

Rocket League

There were several teams that remained undefeated last week, including Queen Marys College 2 in group A and DON’T PANiC! in group B, they were joined by Sunderland Seers 2 and Farnborough Falcons to the playoffs, respectively.

Queen Marys College 1, the other team from that college, also went undefeated after beating Felsted School 2.

In group E, AGSB Esports won all 4 fixtures in their group and will continue in the competition, and the same goes for Marling Matadors in group F and Seers 1 in group H.

The top 2 teams from each group now progress to the playoffs, where the top 16 teams will face-off until we have the remaining two, who will play at the British Esports Championships 2019-20 grand finals at Insomnia.

League of Legends

Despite a win over Basilisk, and with their Rocket League teams doing well, Queen Mary’s College 1 finished in third place in the League of Legends tournament, unable to move onto the elimination stage.

Meanwhile, having been 100% successful in all their games within their group, Farnborough Peregrines move forward as the top seed in group A and make their way into playoffs.

In group B, SDC secured their place in the playoffs, while there was a three-way tie for the other team progressing, based on the win time of each match against each other. So SDC (27:35) and Heckmondwike (33:02) progress, with Hills Road (37:32) narrowly missing out.

Elsewhere, Try Hards (CONEL)’s win over Farnborough Cryptics ensured they stayed undefeated in group C, while Art of the Int – Lincoln College dominated group D and remained undefeated, despite their name suggesting otherwise!

AGSB Esports also remain undefeated in group E, with a 4-win streak, and go through to the playoffs. The same goes for Wyke 6th Form College in group F and Hills Road BDC in group G.

Like Rocket League, the top two from each group have reached the playoffs.

Overwatch

Unlike Rocket League and League of Legends, teams playing in our Overwatch Championships will not move forward to the elimination stage until the week beginning March 16th, with the last week of group stages starting on March 9th. And it’s going to be tougher, because due to the higher number of teams taking part in Overwatch, just one team from each group will progress.

Looking back on last week’s action, in group B both TTS Esports Red and Farnborough Merlins have yet to lose a match. We look forward to next week when they go against one another…this will definitely be a match to watch!

In group C, Nescot Phoenix have only lost one match so far and are leading the way in first place within the group, with Wyke Gamer Girlz, Confetti Arrows and Farnborough Kestrels currently tied in points. Will any of them be able to overtake Nescot Phoenix?

Elsewhere, Coventry Crosshairs (group D) and GowerCollSwan1 (group E) remain undefeated, while Wyke Whiteboard Warriors have a 4-win streak in group F, with KES Scorpions and Basilisk currently tied in points behind them.

Farnborough Peregrines are top of their group (G) with 12 points after their victory over BFC Overwatch, and both Seers and Arthur Terry School are tied for top place in group H with 9 points each.
