The University of Roehampton is launching a scholarship for students with talents in esports. The scholarship, the first of its kind for a London university, will be worth £1,500 a year and will support a student on any course at any level, undergraduate or postgraduate, within the university.

To start with, up to ten esports scholarships will be available for students enrolling in 2019 – and applications will be expected from September 2018.

Students applying for the scholarship will need to demonstrate aptitude in the field and in common with other sports scholarships available at the University, successful applicants over the coming years will be required to display their commitment to esports alongside successful academic progression.

The esports scholarships will form part of the University of Roehampton’s Sport Roehampton scholarships programme.

Mark Ellul, Registrar at the University of Roehampton, said: “This scholarship is about recognising talent in a field that has a growing popularity both around the world and among our students.

“The University of Roehampton already has a successful sports programme, underpinned by financial and coaching support for students who excel in their chosen field, and this new scholarship is a natural progression from that as we seek to develop our wider offering in esports.”

The University of Roehampton, London, is an established international higher-education institution with a distinguished history dating back to the 1840s. It was one of the first institutions in the UK to admit women to its colleges of higher education. This tradition of commitment to equality continues to be part of the ethos of the University; its 9,000 student body includes international students from over 146 countries.

Today the University is renowned for its expertise across teacher training, business, social sciences, the arts and humanities, as well as human and life sciences.

The University joins other educational establishments offering esports courses in the UK, including Staffordshire and York Universities, as well as the AIM college esports course and more.
