The BTEC Level 3 National Extended Diploma in Esports has been developed to meet the demand for skills in esports.

The qualifications include a breadth of transferable skills that enable learners to experience different areas of esports to aid their progression to employment, either directly or via further study.

Esports offers a unique opportunity to study a sector that crosses over multiple subject areas such as sport, marketing, enterprise, IT and the creatives. It provides an opportunity for alignment of social, physical, mental and financial skills into one qualification to deepen and expand learning.

These are skills that are highly valued in the changing and fluid workplace. Learners must apply strategy, skill and teamwork to be successful.

COURSE OVERVIEW

The BTEC Level 3 National Extended Diploma in Esports is 1080 GLH and is a qualification for learners aged 16+.

It is equivalent in size to 3 A Levels and is designed to be taken on its own as a 2 year, full time study programme. Due to a wider choice of optional units, it allows learners to access employment in a wider range of esports areas.

The BTEC Level 3 National Extended Diploma in Esports also offers learners the opportunity to progress to further study and higher education.

QUALIFICATION FOR?

The BTEC Level 3 National Extended Diploma in Esports is aimed at learners who want to progress to employment in the esports industry, possibly via an apprenticeship, or who may aspire to enter higher education.

The BTEC Level 3 National Extended Diploma in Esports is endorsed by the British Esports Federation as being suitable for learners that want to work in this industry. This means that it will be recognised by employers and will support entry into the industry in a range of roles.

This qualification also offers learners the opportunity to progress to a broad range of higher education programmes, including bachelor’s degrees.

WHAT DOES THIS QUALIFICATION COVER?

The BTEC Level 3 National Extended Diploma in Esports has been developed in consultation with key stakeholders. This ensures that the content is appropriate and consistent with current industry practice to enable learners to enter employment.

Higher education institutions have been consulted to ensure that the qualification allows appropriate progression for those aspiring to higher level study.

This is a career focused qualification with industry endorsement that enables learners to learn underpinning knowledge, develop technical and transferable skills, and gain experience in a variety of different sections of the esports industry.

Learners taking this qualification will study 5 mandatory units:

  • Unit 1: Introduction to Esports
  • Unit 2: Esports Skills, Strategies and Analysis
  • Unit 3: Enterprise and Entrepreneurship in the Esports Industry
  • Unit 4: Health, Well being and Fitness for Esports Players
  • Unit 5: Esports Events

The mandatory content allows learners to develop their technical skills across the different unit areas, supported by underpinning knowledge, and provides the opportunity for learners to relate these to the esports industry.

Learners will also be able to choose 10 optional units up to a total of 600 GLH. The optional units are intended to give breadth of choice for learners to gain depth in a range of units across the esports areas of employment, such as sport, media, IT and business enterprise, in addition to those learned in the mandatory units.

WHAT COULD THIS QUALIFICATION LEAD TO?

The primary focus of the BTEC Level 3 National Extended Diploma in Esports is on progressing into employment across a range of roles within esports.

  • Social Media Influencer
  • Video Production Editor
  • Photographer
  • Data Analyst

The qualification attracts UCAS Tariff points and is recognised by higher education providers as contributing to entry requirements for many related courses.

When taken in a 2 year, full time study programme, learners can progress to higher education degree programmes, such as a BA (Hons) in Events Management, a BA (Hons) in Media or a BA (Hons) in Esports, as well as accessing other higher education programmes.

Learners should check entry requirements for specific degree programmes with providers.

WHAT EMPLOYABILITY SKILLS DOES THIS DEVELOP?

In the BTEC National qualifications in the esports industry, there are a number of opportunities during the teaching and learning phase to give learners practice in developing employability skills.

Where employability skills are referenced in this specification, we are generally referring to skills in the following 3 main categories:

  • Cognitive and problem solving skills: using critical thinking, approaching non routine problems and applying creative solutions
  • Interpersonal skills: communicating, working collaboratively, negotiating and influencing, self presentation
  • Intrapersonal skills: self management, adaptability and resilience, self monitoring and development

There are also specific requirements in some units for assessment of these skills where relevant, for example where learners are required to undertake real or simulated activities.

DEVELOP TRANSFERABLE SKILLS & KNOWLEDGE

All BTEC Nationals provide transferable knowledge and skills that prepare learners for progression to Higher Education.

The transferable skills that universities value include the ability to learn independently, research actively and methodically, make appropriate presentations, use digital systems and technology and to be an active group member.

BTEC learners can also benefit from opportunities for in depth holistic study where they are able to make connections between different areas of learning.

BTEC Nationals provide a vocational context in which learners can develop the skills required for particular degree courses, including teamwork, project work, presentation and analytical skills.
