Interservice Championship kicks off in Sunderland

British Esports’ National Esports Performance Campus (NEPC) in Sunderland is hosting the Interservice Championship for military esports teams this week.

This sees the Royal Navy, British Army and Royal Air Force Rocket League teams compete with one another on December 10th and 11th 2025 (see members of teams in the photo above taken by Jonas Kontautas).

The British Forces Broadcasting Service (BFBS) is organising the Interservice Championship, providing production, broadcast, operational support and on-the-ground hosting. This comes after it recently ran its inaugural Pro League Grand Final in September, and struck a media partnership with British Esports’ International Defence Esports Games (IDEG) in November.

British Esports is of course providing the facilities from its world-class NEPC in Sunderland, providing a space for teams to stay, bootcamp and compete.

The event is also being co-streamed on the BFBS Twitch channel.

Lt Peri Stynes, Royal Navy Esports Secretary, said: “Esports is growing rapidly in the Armed Forces and hosting an Interservice Finals at the NEPC Sunderland lays the foundations for what’s to come for the sport. None of this is possible, however, without the passion and dedication of service individuals, and the support that BFBS provides them to make these aspirations a reality.”

Robert Wylie, Head of BFBS Esports, added: “Over the last few years, we’ve built a strong connection with the tri-service esports associations, and this event is a natural continuation of that partnership. We’re proud to support them once again and build on our growing history of working together to foster a stronger, healthier, esports scene with the UK military. The Rocket League Championship will be a showcase of the very best players and teams from across the services, a brilliant platform to celebrate the talent and competitive spirit within the UK Armed Forces.”

British Esports President Chester King commented: “It’s fantastic to have the military service up here in Sunderland for this event. We’ve got an incredible facility, a mixture of gaming houses, a series of big open spaces for the Rocket League matches, esports rooms, pro rooms, we’ve got training rooms and classrooms too, where we teach the Esports BTEC. And then next summer, we’re opening our own dedicated Gaming and Esports Arena.”
