The British Esports Student Championships 2020/21 live grand finals reached a total of 182,000 live views throughout the weekend, with a max concurrent viewership of 9,800 people.

The full event was broadcast across the British Esports Twitch channel live from the Confetti Metronome in Nottingham on July 3rd 2021.

Previously, the finals were held at Insomnia, so this was the first time the Student Champs was a stand-alone event.

The event saw schools and colleges from across the country come together to determine Division 1 & 2 season winners for League of Legends, Overwatch and Rocket League tournaments. You can find out more about the winners of each of these games in this recap article.

In addition to this, there was a separate FIFA showmatch between two students from the National Star College following a pilot with Microsoft UK. Watch back the highlights from National Star College here.

The finals didn’t just feature the division finals for each title, but also had plenty of activities for the general public to enjoy. This included a hop-on-hop-off games station with university esports body NUEL, sim racing time laps with Williams F1, a treasure hunt with UK esports organisation Resolve and a Virtual Reality station. James Fraser-Murison, Teacher and Esports lead at Queen Mary’s College in Basingstoke, commented: “It’s the first time that i’ve been here [at the Confetti Metronome venue] and what a magnificent set up and arena. Unfortunately the QMC Samurai’s Champs team fell at the semi finals hurdle, but this event is certainly our incentive to get ourselves ready to be here in person next year.”

Ann, Parent of a AGSB student attending the grand finals also commented “The show was so professional both teams and all players were seen equitably and shown well. As parents who think gaming is a distraction, we were impressed. I have not realised how sociable and entertaining gaming can be and more so in COVID times with teenagers stuck at home, as social isolation is a massive issue for mental health”.

Schools and colleges can now register their interest for the British Esports Student Champs in September – which provides an avenue to engage with, motivate and inspire students. The Student Champs are a series of competitive gaming tournaments for students aged 12+ in schools and colleges across the UK.

It is an extracurricular team-based activity that will engage a wider demographic of young people than existing school clubs and activities. It’s been proven to increase attendance levels, leadership and communication skills, cognitive ability, and has strong links to STEAM subjects and the development of digital skills.

Any questions regarding the upcoming Champs season can be directed to Schools and Colleges Liaison Officers Alice Leaman and Elliot Bond at champs@britishesports.org.
