What can we expect from the Overwatch teams in the 2020 Winter British Esports Championships? Dominic Sacco 3 min read | 19 Oct 2020 The Winter 2020 British Esports Championships kicked off earlier this month, with school and college teams from across the UK competing in Overwatch, Rocket League and League of Legends. Bryony-Hope Green looks ahead to this Wednesday’s live Overwatch broadcast on Twitch, taking place from 4pm BST. So far, the 41 teams that have played in Overwatch have shown they’re willing to put up a strong fight to progress through the qualifiers. It’s the teams that have prior experience in the Championships that are taking the lead. To the surprise of many, back-to-back champions the Sunderland Seers have not entered themselves into this season.  Previous competitors Arthur Terry, Coventry Crosshairs, BSA Griffins (previously Barnsley College), KES Scorpions, LlandrilloDragons, Merthyr Mountains and Wyke have all won their first games against Championship newcomers – putting them in good stead for the rest of the season. Last year’s semi-finalists Coventry Crosshairs have gotten off to a great start by beating the WestHerts 3-0 in their first match. They have a real chance to make a comeback this season. However, a lot of new teams have made a good first impression by showing that they are strong competitors. BSFC, Braintree Basilisks, Bridgend Cobras, and East Norfolk Knights are some of the newbies who took their first matches with 3-0 victories. With so many new teams to play matches, and some more of last season’s stars playing this week too, it is uncertain where the season is going to go. Who will emerge as eventual victors and take Seers’ crown? Currently the BSA Griffins, Bridgend Cobras and the Coventry Crosshairs sit in the top three spots as we move into week three of qualifiers. One thing is for certain – this seasons’ Championships are set to be the biggest and most exciting yet! You can check out the full Overwatch Winter Qualifier Standings so far here. Who’s playing this week? This Wednesday at 4pm, undefeated GCS Owls take on the West Suffolk Cobras, who have won one and lost one match so far. Then at 5pm, Heckmondwike Hotshots (one win) will face-off against Arthur Terry (two wins out of two) live on stream. Catch all the action over on the British Esports Twitch Channel on Wednesday October 21st October at 4pm BST. And tune in the following weeks for Rocket League and League of Legends – same time, same place!
